Every Wednesday, for the past six years, I have received a new car to test drive and review. If you’ve seen my social media feeds, you’ll notice the reviews run the gamut from cars to trucks to SUVs. When they come to take the test car away, sometimes I don’t want to give them back. The 2024 Land Rover Defender 110 X-Dynamic SE is one of those vehicles. Equipped with too many features to highlight, it officially makes this automotive journalist’s heart skip a beat…or two.
The Land Rover Defender is Stunning Inside Out
The Land Rover Defender is a testament to timeless elegance, seamlessly blending classic and modern design elements. Our sleek Defender 110 X Dynamic SE featured a two-toned color scheme with black accents over a Fuji white body. It turned heads as we cruised, causing pedestrians to pause for a better look. The Landy’s glossy finish and aerodynamic curves made it the star of the road, leaving an indelible impression on all who saw it.
The Defender’s robust exterior displays a sense of power, while the interior is a testament to fine European craftsmanship. The black leather seats provide a comfortably luxurious feel that helps to enhance the driving experience. With its exceptional performance, unmatched capability, and upscale appointments, the Land Rover Defender is a marvel of engineering and design. It’s the perfect vehicle for those who demand the best. After all, the previous Defender was Queen Elizabeth II’s vehicle of choice when driving through the lush landscape of her summer retreat at Balmoral Castle.
The Return of Defender
Enthusiasts celebrated the return of the Defender a few years ago. But not all were on board with this new, softer look. More family-friendly and super model-ish than its off-road namesake, it was designed for buyers who believe the journey and destination are equally important.
The redesigned Defender allows owners to conquer the most challenging terrains, whether they are rutted, mudded, or just plain wet. With all the functions, conveniences, and comforts, this vehicle is the perfect companion for those thrill seekers who love finding adventure in every journey. No matter how harrowing, the Land Rover Defender is always ready to challenge and emerge victorious over every situation it finds itself in.
Driving the Defender 110.
Power for our seductive Defender 110 came from a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine delivering 395 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft of torque. In terms of acceleration, the Defender 110 has a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds. It’s an impressive number for an off-road SUV. However, the extra weight of the Defender 110 might impede its acceleration. Our test Defender tipped the scale at 5,571 pounds. But that’s only 370 pounds heavier than the two-door Defender 90.
Unlike most off-road vehicles, the Defender offers excellent handling and precise steering while still maintaining strong off-road capability. It has the smooth performance of a luxury SUV, thanks to its ZF 8-speed transmission that provides seamless gear changes. The brakes are easy to control, making it ideal for smooth stops around town.
The Land Rover Defender is a top-tier luxury SUV that few competitors can match. While the Lexus LX 600 is one such competitor, it has some drawbacks, making it difficult to recommend over the Defender. Although the Lexus is more affordable, it is not as luxurious. Despite its flaws, the 2024 Land Rover Defender has many advantages that make it a desirable choice. Pricing, which starts at $72,000 may be a drawback for some, but those who seek a luxury SUV with exceptional off-road abilities and a spirit for adventure will find the Defender a perfect fit, whether for daily chores or thrilling off-road adventures.
The price tag, not so much.
