Sunscreen is a must year round not only in the summer months as it helps us to reflect the suns ultraviolet radiation as well as protect us against sunburns, hyperpigmentation, prevent premature aging and skin cancer. According to the American Academy of Dermatology 1 in 5 americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
Its recommended to use sunscreen even during cloudy days and near water, snow and sand as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chance of sunburn.
According to the (AAD) Sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays that reach the earth — UVA rays and UVB rays. Overexposure to either can lead to skin cancer. In addition to causing skin cancer, here’s what each of these rays do:
- UVA rays (or aging rays) can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles and age spots, and can pass through window glass.
- UVB rays (or burning rays) are the primary cause of sunburn and are blocked by window glass.
With so many out in the market its hard to narrow it down. Here is what is recommended when your purchasing sunscreen that it contains the following on the label:
Provides Broad Spectrum, which means the sunscreen protects against UVB and UVA rays and helps prevent skin cancer and sunburn.
Check for a SPF of 30 or higher. While SPF 15 is the FDA’s minimum recommendation for protection against skin cancer and sunburn, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
Has a Skin Cancer/Skin Aging Alert in the Drug Facts section of the label, which means the sunscreen will only prevent sunburn and will NOT reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging
Is Water Resistant (effective for up to 40 minutes in water) or Very Water Resistant (effective for up to 80 minutes in water). This means the sunscreen provides protection while swimming or sweating up to the time listed on the label.
Here are my three top choices
Tizo Age Defying Fusion
I absolutley loved this sunscreen is a Board Spectrum, has a SPF of 40 UVA -UVB as well as water resistant for up to 80 minutes and is a tinted facial mineral sunscreen applying is silky and and matte finish that helps prevent premature aging, sun induced wrinkles and sits perfectly under your makeup.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face and Body Stick
This is my favorite to protect my body as I feel it adheres more to my body’s skin glides on easily and with no messy oil feeling , non-shiny finish and contains a 70 SPF UVA-UVB , broad spectrum. They also have the sport version with a SPF of 50 in spray. I prefer the stick.
While this only has the minimum required by FDA 15 SPF . This a 3-1 makeup primer, moisturizer and sunscreen. The essential amounts of vitamins A, C, and E yield a smoothing, anti-oxidant, protective product for all skin types. I use this one at night under my makeup or when I go to the gym and have a hat.
I invite you to test them and which one you choose protect your skin at all times and year round. Protect your skin and check in with your dermatologist for what suits you best.
Remember sharing is caring!
